As you contemplate one of the most consequential four-day cricket games Kent have played for at least three seasons, ladies and gentlemen, cast your minds back for a moment to April of this year, when Northants visited Canterbury. Dolly Parton was still with us, you could still comment on Kent's social media posts and Brydon Carse was chiefly famous for being a cricketer whose surname sounded like a slightly rude word.
The first Watling Street derby of the season did not look like being a “24-pointer”. A level of optimism had built over pre-season and as a result of a semi-fortunate draw with Durham, but that didn’t survive the first day. Kent were dreadful.
