“Ah no, New Zealand have scored again,” said Keith Dudgeon, after completing his post-match interview on Saturday. The South African bowler had resisted the temptation to watch his compatriots on the television in the corner of the press box at the St Lawrence while talking to the media, but once his duties were done he couldn’t help himself.
When Ardie Savea scored the All Blacks’ second try, it looked as though the visitors would win and the parallels with the four days Dudgeon had just been through were obvious. Two quality sides were locked in a proper dog fight and for long periods there was no way of telling who would come out on top.
