The year 2000 wasn’t the happiest for Kent, with a difficult season bookended by the deaths of two icons.

EW Swanton’s passing in January wasn’t a huge surprise given that was 92, but when Colin Cowdrey didn’t see out the year it was something of a shock, even if he had been ill for several months after suffering a stroke. He succumbed to a heart attack in December, aged just 67.

It was a landmark season for English cricket because the county championship had been split into two divisions for the first time, but Kent had a forgettable campaign, falling in the group stages of the B&H Cup and losing to Glamorgan by five wickets in the fourth round of the Nat West Trophy.
