Local newspapers may be dying out, but local news is making a comeback.

For the past five years I’ve been the Kent correspondent for both the ECB Reporters Network and Wisden.

I try to make sure that at least one line in every report I file could not have been written by a bot, but every now and again I’d actually like to read something that hasn’t been written in five minutes after the close of play and this is the idea behind The Spitfire.

The mission is to provide dedicated, independent reporting of Kent’s flagship sporting institution and we’ll be joining the CounterPress stable for the 2026 season as they look to revitalise coverage of the county game.

We hope you enjoy it.

Fred Atkins, March 2026.
